Community members who take the Hands and Words pledge will be eligible for a prize drawing.

To enter, first take the pledge, "I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others." Then deposit your signed pledge form in a receptacle - a purple pail, in keeping with the Hands project's purple logo - in one of about three dozen participating businesses in McMinnville or Dayton.

Winners will be drawn at the end of Hands and Words are Not for Hurting Week, Oct. 15-21.

Some businesses are planning special activities in conjunction with the week, as well. For instance, Incahoots will host a Purple Hands Tea Party with hand and heart cookies from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21.

Incahoots, at Ninth and Baker in McMinnville, has been participating in Hands and Words events for several years. "There's a need to support nonviolence," said Brian Bailey, owner of the gift and plant shop. "There's too much in the media that's the other direction. We need to counteract that."

The store's staff members annually take the pledge, "I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others." Bailey said that for him, it's a natural thing to do, because it parallels the way he lives his life.

In addition to Incahoots, participating locations - who will have "Purple Pail Partner" signs posted in their windows - at this date include:

McMinnville: Honest Chocolates & Ochards Bistro, Geraldi's, Ranch Records, Third Street Books, Head Start, Harvest Fresh, McMinnville Public Library children's and reference departments, Copy Cats, Denyse's Hallmark, Art of the Vine, Luigi's Daughter, New to You, Hopscotch Toys, the community center, Jo-Ann Fabrics, the Birthing Center at Willamette Valley Medical Center, YCAP, Hawk's World Gallery, Paws on Third, Oakwood Country Place, Hillside Retirement Communities, Snap 'n Scrap, News-Register, Union Block, Alpine Cleaners, La Bella Casa, Kraemer's Garden & Pet, Tutto Bella, Third Street Pizza, Willamette Educational Service District, Cindy's Body Shop, Union Block Coffee, O'Riley's coffee shop at Linfield College, and the senior center.

Dayton: Putt's Market, Center Market, Dayton Post Office, Dayton City Hall and the Mary Gilkey Public Library.

Each location will award a door prize. In addition, all entries will be eligible for the grand prize, a three-night stay at oceanfront Pacific Winds Condominiums in Lincoln City.

Last year, the Hands and Words project collected 93 pledges from community members during the week. This year, organizers hope for almost 300.

"While our program begins in the schools, it's really for all ages," said Kathy Robinson, a Hands volunteer. "The Purple Pail Project is a great opportunity to take the pledge for the first time or reinforce past pledges. You just can't say it often enough."
